Darling Diva Caffeine Junkie: Spray Marble Nail Art

Good afternoon, readers! I recently won a prize package of two custom polishes from Ashley Is PolishAddicted's 3 Year Blogiversary Giveaway. I showed you the custom Elevation Polish Ferventon Saturday, and today I'm wearing the other custom: Darling Diva Caffeine Junkie. I loved the flakes and shimmer in this base polish and decided to do a spray marble over it for my full mani.

I love the randomness of a spray marble. Each nail's design is unique, especially when you do multiple layers of marble! Here's how I did it:

  • I started out with three thin coats of Darling Diva Caffeine Junkie.
  • Then, I filled my shot glass with tap water, dropped a few drops of OPI Love.Angel.Music.Baby onto the surface of the water, and sprayed my rubbing alcohol on top. (I bought an empty spray bottle in the travel section at the store and put rubbing alcohol in it.)
  • I sprayed a few times until I liked the design on the water.
  • Then, I dunked my nail where I wanted it and used a toothpick to remove the excess polish from the water surface before I pulled my finger out of the water. I was able to dunk 2 nails at a time sometimes as well.
  • I then repeated the same steps above using Elevation Polish The Med 2 for another layer of marbled color.
  • I topped this with 2 coats of HKGirl Top Coat to smooth out the marble layers.
  • I recommend tape, vaseline, Liquid Palisade, or something to protect the skin around your nails or you will have a ton of cleanup.

Look at the flakie goodness in the macro below!

What do you think of this look? I love mixing color combos and polish finishes to create new spray marble designs. Thanks so much to Ashley from Ashley Is PolishAddicted and Carrie from Darling Diva Polish for my prize!

KBShimmer Cuticle Oil Pens!

Good afternoon, readers! KBShimmer released their new Winter Collection on the 1st and I showed you some of them a couple of weeks ago. Adding to the new collection of polishes are new scents to the Cuticle Oil Pen line. This was my first time trying cuticle oil by KBShimmer and I will share my thoughts below on the two new holiday scents I received: Raspberry Vanilla and Peppermint.

Here is a bit of info for you from the KBShimmer site about the cuticle oil:

We started with a base of avocado oil, and added shea butter, apricot oil, wheat germ oil, evening primrose oil, argan oil, jojoba and olive oil.  Vitamin E finishes off the base of the cuticle oil.

KBShimmer Raspberry Vanilla Cuticle Oil Pen: To that base,  we added our Raspberry Vanilla scent.  Full of the sweetness of ripe berries and the  creamy flavor of vanilla, this popular scent is a year round favorite.

I really love the scent of this Raspberry Vanilla Cuticle Oil. I wasn't sure what to expect and its just so yummy! I couldn't stop smelling my nails after application!

KBShimmer Peppermint Cuticle Oil Pen: To that base,  we added our Peppermint scent.  Just like a candy cane, this peppermint has notes of sugary sweetness and the crisp chill that only peppermint essential oil can provide.

I also like wearing this Peppermint cuticle oil scent. It really smells like holiday candy canes and it's unisex enough that I am able to convince Mr. Adventures In Acetone to let me put it on his cuticles after I cut his nails.

The cuticle oil pens each contain 2ml of oil in these awesome applicators. The soft, hollow brush tip easily fills with oil and its so simple to apply to your cuticles quickly. I just twist the bottom a few clicks before applying. These are perfect for your purse as they have a tightly sealed cover and they can't spill in the car during a quick application like some other containers of oil I have.

Below, you can see my easily painting the oil around my nails. It hardly needs any rubbing into the skin and feels really great once applied.

What do you think of these cuticle oil pens? I am definitely liking them a lot and I find myself grabbing for them often because they are so easy to use.

There are 6 scent options for the Cuticle Oil Pens: Lemongrass, Raspberry Vanilla, Peppermint, Chai Tea, Pink Sugar, and Unscented.

They retail for $6 each.

Swirls, Dots, and Pipe Dream Polish V.I.P. Pass!

Good afternoon, readers! I have a simple nail art mani to show you today. I was so excited to grab Pipe Dream Polish V.I.P. Pass at one of the last restocks and this is how I wore it! Swirls and dots are simple and eye catching, and I loved the odd color palette.

I started with the base of Pipe Dream Polish V.I.P. Pass and let it dry. Then, I used a thin nail art brush and OPI Viking In A Vinter Vonderland to do swirls. I made sure not to make them too tight that I wouldn't fit the dots in-between the layers. The dots were done using a small dotting tool and OPI I Just Can't Cope-acabana. I sealed off the design with HKGirl Top Coat.

What do you think? Thanks so much for reading, I hope you all have a great weekend!

Good morning, readers! I have the new Zoya Wishes Collection for Winter/Holiday 2014 today. There are 6 polishes, three of which are Magical Pixie Dusts. They all coordinate well together, and I can see a lot of nail art/accent nail possibilities! Let's take a look!

Wishes really do come true with this magical new nail polish collection for Winter/Holiday 2014! Zoya Wishes is a densely pigmented assortment featuring both traditional and Magical PixieDust formulas in coordinating color combinations that can be worn alone or combined into stunning combinations, no matter how you wear them, this collection delivers a fanciful way to celebrate the season!

Zoya Haven
True holiday plum liquid metal with a thin vein of orchid for added brilliance.
I'm showing two coats below with no top coat.
This is my favorite from the collection! In the sun it's almost glowing from within.

Zoya Thea
Deep amethyst Magical Pixie Dust with an orchid flash, packed full of party-ready holographic hex glitter.
I'm showing two coats below with no top coat.
I let it dry sufficiently between coats but the Pixies from this collection just do not dry down matte or super textured like we've seen in the past.

Zoya Prim
Velvet blue metallic, with a full coverage, high-density pigment and buttery smooth application.
I'm showing two coats with no top coat  below.
There are some visible brush strokes and a bit of a metallic feel.

Zoya Nori
Sapphire blue Magical Pixie Dust with holographic hex glitter, perfect for any holiday festivity.
I'm showing two coats below with no top coat.
As I said above with Thea, these don't dry down to super matte and textured as we've seen in the past.

Zoya Willa
Full coverage, onyx black creme.
I'm showing two coats below with no top coat.
Although it needs two coats, I love how shiny this is!

Zoya Imogen
Black crystal Magical Pixie Dust with holographic hex glitter, just add a LBD and you're off!
I'm showing two coats below with no top coat.
Although this also did not dry down matte and super textured, it did have the most glitter payoff and therefore more texture once dry.

What do you think of the new Wishes Collection by Zoya? Which are your favorites? Mine is definitely Haven! I'll admit that I'm bummed that the Magical Pixie Dusts don't dry down to super matte and textured like the originals, these to me are more like jelly glitters that would need two coats of top coat to smooth out. I guess I'm a sucker for the original texture trend. Thanks so much for reading!

The Digit-al Dozen DOES Thankfulness, Day 1: Vinyl Nail Guides.

Good morning, readers! It's time for another nail art week with The Digit-al Dozen! This month's theme is Thankfulness and it's posing quite the challenge when it comes to conveying ideas into nail art. I am so absolutely thankful to God for the blessings in my life such as my husband, children, family, friends, food on our table, a home, our health, my husband's employment, etc. Those are really the most important things in my life but aren't that easy to do as nail art. So, I think I'll look at this week as a way to show some of the little things in life I am thankful for. Whether they just make me happy or make my life as a busy mom easier.

So, for Day 1 of things I am thankful for: vinyl nail guides. As a nail art blogger and stay at home mom to two young children (while homeschooling my 1st grader), it's not always easy to fit the time in for nail art. I usually find myself awake hours before anyone else in the house so I can get swatches or nail art done. Sometimes, I just can't find enough energy or inspiration at 5am for something exciting.

There are some amazing brands out there that sell nail guides for easy nail art and I am a big fan! Quick, easy, and SUPER FUN nail art all at once? Count me in. KBShimmer just released chevron vinyl nail guides that are connected on the edges so you don't have to take the time to perfectly space out your strips. I ordered them as soon as I saw them and let me tell you-- having the edges combined is a GAME CHANGER. Nail guides were always easy to use, but I'll admit that I'm not the best at getting my lines even. These apply as one sheet and pull off as one sheet so not only did I save a lot of time, but I also ended up with a much better manicure than my previous attempts.

To create this look:
  • I started with three thin coats of the new Elevation Polish Sunset Among The Palms.
  • I used one coat of KBShimmer Clearly On Top Quick Dry Top Coat and let dry for about 30 mins to make sure the guide stickers wouldn't pull it back up. (This is when I go eat breakfast and drink my coffee!)
  • I then applied one chevron guide to each nail, making sure to press along the edges of the cuticle.
  • I painted one coat of Elevation Polish Shilin Stone Forest over the entire nail.
  • While it was still wet, I peeled the chevron guide off of my nail, pulling from one side across to the other.
  • Lastly, I added KBShimmer Clearly On Top to seal in the design and smooth out the different levels of polish.

You can find these chevron nail vinyl guides and other shapes HERE at KBShimmer.com now for only $5 a sheet. I also have a sheet of holiday designs that I can't wait to try!

So today, I am thankful for vinyl nail guides that make nail art easier for a busy mom trying to fit it all in. What are you thankful for? Thanks so much for reading, and come back each day this week to see what The Digit-al Dozen girls and I are thankful for!

The Digit-al Dozen DOES Thankfulness, Day 2: Nail Polish Friends

Good afternoon, readers! Its Thankfulness Week with The Digit-al Dozen and today I am thankful for the many awesome friends I've met over the past 3 years in the nail polish community. I started blogging when my husband was deployed to Afghanistan with the US Army. It was a lonely time for me, even with a couple friends and Hailey being a 3 year old at the time and keeping me busy during the day. I had so much free time on my hands at night when she went to bed that I found myself sucked into the world of nail art and a few nail art groups on Facebook. They turned into my online family and I am still good friends with some that I've known since the beginning.

For today's nail art, I've recreated a nail art look by one of my closest nail art friends--Ashley from Ashley Is PolishAddicted. It just so happens to be herBIRTHDAY today, so it's perfectly fitting! Happy Birthday, Ashley!

Ashley did this gradient using the Summer 2013 Zoya Pixie Dusts and I have wanted to recreate it since I saw her do it last April. She even has an awesome easy-to-follow tutorial HERE.

I started with a base coat of white creme polish to help the colors pop once sponged on the nail. Then, I followed Ashley's tutorial using all of the Zoya Summer Pixie Dusts. No top coat since I wanted the texture to stay.

Ashley is one of the sweetest people I know, online or in person and I am so thankful to be her friend. I hope you liked my recreation. Make sure you head over to her Facebook Page and wish her HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

The Digit-al Dozen DOES Thankfulness, Day 3: Coffee!

Good morning, readers! Today, as part of our Thankfulness Week with The Digit-al Dozen, I am thankful for coffee! Even as I type this, I am sipping on a cup. In case you didn't guess from my post on monday, life here can be a bit hectic. Getting up at 5am to fit in some nail time wouldn't really be possible without my daily coffee. (Who am I kidding, sleeping in on some weekend days still requires coffee asap LOL!) For my nail art today, I've done a watermarble that reminds me of when I'm mixing my creamer into my coffee (or the pretty surface designs when you get coffee at a coffee shop). My accent nail is a cup of steaming coffee over Darling Diva Caffeine Junkie. Fitting, right?

I did the watermarble with OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls, OPI Going My Way or Norway?, and Nicole by OPI Promises In The Dark.

What do you think? Are you a coffee drinker? What's your favorite flavor? I have a Keurig and my favorite flavors are Hazelnut, Mocha, or Vanilla Biscotti at the moment. Thanks so much for reading!

The Digit-al Dozen DOES Thankfulness, Day 4: Target!

Good evening, readers! For my 4th day of Thankfulness with The Digit-al Dozen, I am thankful for Target! Yes, the retail store. There are a zillion things I love about Target but some stand out more than others. I was a cashier there as my very first job at 16 years old.  About a year or two after I started working there, I met my now-husband! Mr. Adventures In Acetone began working there and it made work so much better. Cheesy, I know, but it's the truth.

Currently, the two biggest things I love about Target are the double-seater children carts and the built in Starbucks. I am at target a few times a week and it's so easy to have both kids strapped in a cart as I stroll through with a frappuccino in hand. Target is on my "making my life easier" list so today I've done some bullseyes for the store logo.

The base is 3 thin coats of OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls. On my accent nail, I used a thin nail art brush and OPI Over & Over A-Gwen to paint the big bullseye. For my other nails, I used three different sized dotting tools to layer the white and reds for an illusion of polka dot bullseyes. I used HKGirl Top Coat to seal it all in.

Are you a target shopper? Thanks so much for reading, I can't wait to show you tomorrow's final design in our week of Thankfulness!

The Digit-al Dozen DOES Thankfulness, Day 5: Books!

Good afternoon, readers! It's the final day of Thankfulness with The Digit-al Dozen! Have you enjoyed this week? I love how different the theme has stretched among the group of us and I've had fun trying to decide what I could incorporate from my life into nail art. Today's nail art is my favorite manicure in a while and I am so excited to wear it all weekend. Today, I am thankful for books. Whether it's the children's books filled with pictures and rhymes that I read with my children daily, or the (mostly) Urban Fantasy books I read for myself as often as I can.

I've done a sparkling, colorful base with the words "live, laugh, love" stamped across them.  Not all the books we read have colorful pages, but those that don't can take us on a journey out of our everyday life and that is what's so magical about books. I am so glad that both of my children, as well as Mr. Adventures In Acetone, love books as much as I do.

 For this look:

  • I started out with a white base and let it dry completely.
  • Then, I tore 5 little bits off of a makeup sponge.
  • I used one sponge piece for each of the following Elevation Polish shades: El Cap II, The Med 2, Kilauea, Sunset Among the Palms, and Avenue of the Baobabs. I sponged one color at a time on a random part of each nail, overlapping slightly with the other colors. I went back a second time if I needed to fill in more white, or if the original sponging wasn't bold enough for me.
  • After I was happy with the sponged base, I used one coat of Elevation Polish Pitaraq to add some gorgeous sparkle.
  • I waited for that to dry, and then I stamped my Live Laugh Love image with Sinful Colors Black on Black and Bundle Monster BM-405.
  • KBShimmer Clearly On Top was used to seal it all in.

What do you think? I am so stoked at the final outcome of this mani and will be so sad if I can't get it to last the entire weekend. Are you a book lover? Tell me some of your favorite series! I'm currently catching up in The Hollows books by Kim Harrison. Thanks so much for reading!

Swatch Saturday: Lighthouse of Hope Collaboration Box

Good morning, readers! I have a really special Collaboration Box to share with you today for Depression Awareness. I am really happy I was able to swatch these beauties and below is the info I received directly from the polish makers.

This special edition box is a collaboration between 8 indie polish makers with proceeds benefiting the group I Need a LightHouse.  I Need a LightHouse is an amazing organization that works directly with people who suffer from depressive disorders as well as educates the family members of those individuals so that they can learn coping methods and help their loved ones.  You can find more information about the organization here.

The box will include the following 8 polishes plus a She Shines topcoat from Alter Ego:

Alter Ego - Grows Hope
A medium green foil-ish finish.
While this woman doesn't suffer from depression she knows lots of people who do. She Grows Hope for those she knows who suffer, trying to make others more aware of how personal these issues can be, and by standing quietly by the side of these people she loves so much, without judgement, to help in whatever way she can.

I'm showing two coats below with She Shines Top Coat. It dries to a matte finish.

Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer - Never Look Back
A clear base packed with emerald green microglitter and sparks of blue and purple.
As someone who suffers from clinical depression, I’m constantly reminding myself to look to the future and not dwell on the past.  It can be immensely difficult to do so, but it is completely necessary for my recovery.  Remember that the future holds amazing things, so don’t dwell on the bad from the past!

I'm showing 2 coats with She Shines top coat. Very densely packed!

ellagee - Sparks Of Hope
A lush emerald green with subtle shifts of teal and gold sparkling with gold holo dust.
Because when things look dark even the smallest spark of hope can light the way to healing.

I'm showing three thin coats with She Shines top coat.

Peita’s Polish - Serenity
A teal crelly full of various sized turquoise holographic glitter.
It reminds me of the twinkling clear waters of Australian beaches. I know the beach is often a place of solace for many people in times of stress.

I'm showing three coats below with She Shine top coat.

Philly Loves Lacquer - I Made You a Nest
A lightly tinted teal base packed with silver, turquoise, teal, blue, and green micro glitters.
I made this to pay homage to the comic by Robot Hugs, which I found right before I sought help for my own depression. Sometimes you just need a friend to make you a nest of cuddly blankets and hang out with you in it when things are really rough. http://www.robot-hugs.com/nest/

I'm showing three coats below with She Shines top coat.

Rica - Alchemical Seas of Hope
A sea green jelly with various green/gold glitters (dots, squares, hexes and micro glitter) in various finishes (holographic, metallic and matte).
I named it Alchemical Seas of Hope because sometimes depression can feel like you’re in turbulent seas. As hard things may seem to be, there is always a lighthouse of hope in the horizon. Don’t lose sight of that.

I'm showing three coats below with She Shines top coat. You can still see slight VNL so layering may work as well.

Superficially Colorful - Breathe
An aqua/turquoise holographic polish with a little silver and blue shimmer.
I think it's what we all need. To take a deep breath and go on. Everything is easier when you can breathe.

I'm showing two coats below with She Shines top coat. The holo is subtle in my light box photos but it's definitely there.

Sweet Heart Polish - You’re Amazing
A deep royal blue jelly with a mix of matte, metallic, and holographic blue glitters in a variety of shapes and sizes with micro iridescent bar glitter.
I named this beauty You’re Amazing, because sometimes you can forget this and it always nice to have a reminder.

I'm showing four coats below with She Shines top coat. There is still VNL at 4 coats, so I would probably layer this.

Each description above was written by each maker to give some insight into why Depression Awareness is important to us.  Boxes will be available starting November 16 at NOON EST at the Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer shop.  This is a very limited box with only 20 being made available for sale.  Each box will cost $80 shipped domestically and $60 of each box will be donated to I Need a Lighthouse within a week of selling out.  International packages will shipped flat rate priority and will cost $94.25 to Canada and $98.25 everywhere else.  For transparency purposes, Julie of BEGL will provide screenshots of the donation and donation amount once it has been made.  If anyone would like to make a donation directly, they can easily do so via the INALH website, here.

What are your thoughts on this box? I think these are 8 gorgeous polishes and I hope some of you will consider purchasing for such a great cause. Which are your favorites? Thanks so much for reading!

Gel Polish Review: Madam Glam Honeydew

Press Sample

Good morning, readers! Today's post is a little different because I got to try out my very first gel polish that you have to cure with a UV/LED light. As a total newbie, I was nervous about screwing it up but it actually was easier than I expected! Madam Glam sells regular nail polish but recently expanded to gel polish as well. Let's take a look!

It's a three bottle process: you need the base coat, color, and top coat. You also need some rubbing alcohol and cotton squares. Lastly, you need a UV/LED light for curing the polish. Gel polish will never dry over time like regular polish. I already had a one-finger sized LED lamp from when I reviewed the Sally Hansen Insta-Gel strips and it worked perfectly for this. The only downside was that I had to cure one nail at a time, 4 times per nail with the different steps.

The colored bottles aren't labeled, but they've painted the inside of the lid to show the color and I think that's such a great idea! If you had a drawer of these it would be easy to find which color you are looking for. The handles are nice to hold while painting as well!

Before you apply your gel polish, you need to push back your cuticles and have a nice manicured surface for the gel to adhere to. I pushed back my cuticles and used cuticle remover to get anything left off of the nail that didn't belong. I lightly buffed the surface as well but that isn't necessary.

Step 1) Use rubbing alcohol to wipe the nail surface completely to remove any oils.

Step 2) Paint one coat of Soak-Off Base Gel. Be careful to only paint on the nail surface and not onto the cuticles or skin surrounding the nail. If you get any on the skin, use an orange stick to swipe it off. Next, place your nail under your lamp and cure. These work cured under LED for 30 seconds, or 2 minutes under a UV lamp. Don't touch the nail surface after curing.

Step 3) Paint one coat of the Honeydew Soak-Off Gel Polish. Again, avoid getting polish anywhere but on the nail, but wipe free with an orange stick if it happens. Do not use acetone on a cleanup brush because it will ruin the edges of the gel. Cure your first color coat under the lamp. For this color, I needed a second coat so I painted and cured once more.

Step 4) Paint one coat of Soak-Off Top Gel and cure under the light.

Step 5) Once you cure the top coat, it leaves a tacky residue on the nail surface. You need to use rubbing alcohol and a cotton pad again to clean the surface. Then, you are done!

Don't forget to moisturize those cuticles and hands after the rubbing alcohol dried them out. Below, you can see the finished product! I tried to get as close to the cuticle as possible without touching so the space is a little bigger than with regular polish. I love the shine and the fact that it was instantly hard to the touch after curing the top coat!

I wore these for a week straight and took the next photos for you. The only difference was the nail growth but they were still shiny and chip free! I'm someone who is lucky to get more than a couple of days out of a regular manicure without chips so I was so happy with these results!

For removal, I used the foil-method. First, I used a nail file to rough up the shiny top coat layer. Then, a cotton square soaked in pure acetone placed directly on the nail and wrapped my finger tips in a square of tin foil to prevent evaporation. After about 15 minutes, I took them off and was able to use an orange stick to push the flecks of gel polish off of my nail. If you do this and still have some polish left, you can use the foil method again or lightly buff your nails.

I had no damage left on my nails so it was a big success! I would love to try some more colors and be able to use them for nail art. I would probably be happier leaving it on for a week or longer if it wasn't a solid color but this shade was so pretty I didn't mind it too much.

What do you think? Are you a gel-polish fan or a newbie like me? You can find these and more gel polish colors at the Madam Glam website below. The base and top coats are currently out of stock but should be back up on the site in the next few days.

Each polish(base coat, top coat, or color) retails for $17.95 each. There is a sitewide Black Friday 40% off sale right now if you use the code BLACK40.

If you visit the site in the future and that code is no longer valid, I have a 30% off coupon code for my readers! Use code YGEL30OFF.

Thanks so much for reading!

Swatch Saturday: Alter Ego Home For The Holidays 2014 Collection

Good morning, readers! I have been sparse on the blog this week, but I am back with a new collection from Alter Ego Nail Enamels! The Home For The Holidays 2014 Collection features 5 polishes inspired by family and friends you would see when you are home for the holidays! Let's take a look!

I've copied what Cynthia has to say about each polish below:

Alter Ego Family Friend Forever
Mother Hen took this person under her wing before either one of them was old enough to remember meeting up! Family Friend Forever knows all the family secrets, but because of her loyalty, she doesn't tell a soul. She's at every gathering, every holiday table and no one in the family thinks there is anything wrong with her being in annual family photos! A true blue with a fabulous shimmer.

I'm showing two coats below with and without She Shines top coat.
This is definitely my favorite of the set, stunning in it's natural matte finish or with top coat to bring out the shimmer!

(above: no top coat, below: one coat of She Shines top coat)

Alter Ego Big Sister
My only sibling, my Big Sister, came to visit recently, it's a 2+ hour drive. She has never been into enamels as much as I have but she said "I have a vision". I gave her some colors to look over & she shouted "these are it"! Bright, vibrant, colorful-just like she is:) Medum size gold & metallic fuschia hex glitters. Take note Colorants do settle upon standing. A high gloss topcoat can bring out subtleties and variants to the colorant.

I'm showing one coat over Family Friend Forever with She Shines top coat. This is densely packed but easy to spread out and work with!

Alter Ego Bosom Buddy
If you weren't related by birth to this gal she'd be your Bosom Buddy anyway! She's always got your back, always taking your side, will go anywhere with you at the drop of a hat no matter where A rusty red with a gorgeous shimmer.

I'm showing 2 coats with and without She Shines top coat. This is another favorite, I just LOVE how Cynthia does full coverage shimmers. They look gorgeous with and without top coat!

(above: without top coat, below: with She Shines top coat)

Alter Ego Greatest Gramma
She's always adored you and is the best cook and baker in the world She was as thrilled to receive your fistful of dandelions and construction paper valentines as if you purchased the finest roses and candy filled heart-this makes her the Greatest Gramma ever! The fine rainbow glitter in the base is the sparkle in her eye whenever she sees you Telling yous upfront like I always do that the hearts and flowers are HEAVY, they are going to sink upon standing. For ezier shaking turn the bottle upside down for a few minutes, then shake, that will go a little faster You may have to fish for the hearts and flowers as well, this seems to be the nature for these larger shapes!

I'm showing one coat with some digging and dabbing of the heavier glitter shapes over Bosom Buddy with She Shines top coat. As Cynthia said above, it's easiest if you turn upside down for a few minutes before application to make fishing of glitter easier. The holo shimmer base is a gorgeous addition to your base color.

Alter Ego Mother Hen
Boy or girl, 2 feet, 4 feet or no feet, if Mother Hen takes you under her wing you're there for life! You can count on a hot meal, a place to sleep and while she may take your side she'll also smack you upside the head if the problem was your fault, then figure out a way to help you recitfy the situation! Pink and blue matte super fine glitter, you may get complete coverage with two or 3 coats

I'm showing three coats below with She Shines top coat. There is VNL at 3 coats, so I would probably layer this over a similar base color next time.

KBShimmer Winter Holiday Vinyl Nail Art!

Good morning, readers! I have the new KBShimmer Winter Holiday Vinyl Nail Decal Sheet to share and review for you today! 11 holiday inspired designs, 72 total decals to either stick to your nails or use as a nail guide to paint over and peel back up. Let's take a look at the 3 example ideas I've created to show a use for all 11 designs!

Before we begin, here is a screen shot of the nail vinyl cut out shapes (credit to kbshimmer.com for the image). The sheet comes in RED, not black as shown for this example. It also has the vinyl in between the cutouts on the sheet. This is just so you can easily see what you are getting on the sheet.

10 strands of Christmas Lights, 14 candy canes, 5 small snow flakes, 6 medium snow flakes, 5 snowflake strands, 6 large snow flakes, 5 ornament strands, 5 ornament/candy cane strands, 5 tree/ornament strands, 5 tree/ornament/tree strands, 6 candy spirals.

The beauty of the cutouts being in red: you can just use them as stickers and top coat over them for an easy nail art look. I, however, prefer to use these as a guide to paint over, and peel back up to reveal the base color.

Here is a little step by step showing how I created my first look:

Step 1) Base colors to show through after peeling up the decals.
  •  Index: 3 coats of OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls
  • Middle and Ring: 2 coats of KBShimmer Pt Young Thing.
  • Pinky: 2 coats of OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls. I used a dry fan brush gently dipped in OPI Over & Over A-Gwen and brushed it side to side for a striped look.
  • Each nail was topped with one coat of KBShimmer Clearly On Top and left to dry for 15-30 mins. (I just found other things I had to do around the house while I waited.)

Step 2) Once they were able to dry for a while, I applied the desired KBShimmer Winter Holiday Vinyl Decals. Make sure to gently, but firmly, press the decals down to the edges of the nail so you don't get polish sneaking under them.

  • Index: one of the spiral mint candy designs. As you can see, your nails could be longer and wider than mine and still fit the design. I had to use my needle nose tweezers to poke out some of the negative space areas after peeling up from the sheet.
  • Middle and Ring: 2 of the Christmas light strings on each finger.
  • Pinky: three candy cane shapes. I made sure to have part of each hanging off of the nail so I would be able to easily peel them back up. If you try to center one on a nail, I don't know how you would get it back off without messing up the polish.

Step 3) One nail at a time, I painted or sponged the desired top color over the entire nail and peeled up the decal before moving onto the next nail. I couldn't show this step as I had to peel them back up while it was still wet.

  • Index: I used a makeup sponge and dabbed OPI Christmas Gone Plaid over the spiral nail to look like a mint candy. (note: I tried this decal once before by painting the polish on, but upon removal, some of the polish spilled over the thin sections. I definitely recommend sponging the color on so there isn't excess.)
  • Middle and ring: I wanted the look of lights on a Christmas tree, so I used a fan brush and swiped from cuticle to tip with both KBShimmer Honeydew List and OPI Christmas Gone Plaid. This gave slight texture and was more like a tree than one solid green.
  • Pinky: I used a makeup sponge and dabbed the textured KBShimmer Dressed To Gild over the candy canes until there was full coverage.

Step 4) Again, I couldn't show this as I had to peel up the decals while the top color was still wet.
  • Index: I carefully peeled the spiral vinyl up while the sponged green color was still wet. I had no issues upon removal.
  • Middle and ring finger: I used needle nose tweezers to carefully peel the light string vinyls back up while the green tree layer was still wet. They removed pretty easily without messing up the design.
  • Pinky: I used needle nosed tweezers to easily peel up the candy cane shapes from the edge that was hanging off of the nail while the texture was still wet. Using a textured polish over vinyls can be a bit tricky because the glitter can stick up after peeling up the vinyl shape. I gently pressed any back down and they didn't seem to overhang too much over the candy cane shape.

Step 5) Clean up skin/cuticles, add details, and then top coat!

  • Index: I cleaned up the sponged green off of my skin and cuticles and added KBShimmer Clearly On Top top coat to seal in the design.
  • Middle and Ring: I used a small dotting tool and the following glitter textures to add color to the lightbulbs on the strings of lights: KBShimmers Too Pop To Handle, Turnip The Beet, Too Cold To Hold, She Twerks Out, and Dressed To Gild. I then added one coat of KBShimmer Clearly On Top top coat to seal it all in. (The addition of the textures really tied in the pinky nail color choice, while the tree colors tied in the spiral on the index finger.)
  • Pinky: I used q-tips and a cleanup brush with acetone to remove any excess glitter on the skin and cuticles. I chose to not top coat this nail and let the texture be fun. The candy canes show through with the stripes I made with a fan brush on the base color and I really love how it turned out! Michelle from Things I Love At The Momentdid a watermarble base for using her candy canes and this was my simplified idea of that since I didn't want to copy her idea completely.

What do you think? I know it seemed like a lot of steps but I had a fun time creating this look! Let's check out how I used the other 8 designs on the KBShimmer Winter Holiday Vinyl Sheet below:

Holiday Color Block Nail Art:
All nails were painted with 2 coats of KBShimmer Pt Young Thing followed by a coat of KBShimmer Clearly On Top top coat. I let them dry for 15-30 minutes again before moving onto adding the nail vinyls.

After completely dry, I used one of each of the 4 different strands to create this easy holiday color block look:
  • Index: I applied the tree-ornament-tree strand across the middle of my nail. The top half of my nail was painted with OPI Christmas Gone Plaid and the bottom half was painted with OPI Cinnamon Sweet. I carefully overlapped each color onto the nail vinyls without crossing into the wrong half of the nail. While still wet, I used my needle nose tweezers to carefully peel the vinyl across the nail to reveal the shapes. KBShimmer Clearly On Top was used to seal in the design.
  • Middle: I did the same as with the index nail, but I used the candy cane-ornament strand across the nail.
  • Ring: I did the same as with the previous nails, but I used the tree-ornament-ornament strand across the nail.
  • Pinky: I did the same as with the previous nails, but I used the ornament strand across the nail.

The use of the tweezers helped when some of the vinyl strips broke partway across the nail. Some of the images are thinner and can stretch and break off if you pressed them down hard to begin with. I was able to easily grab with the tweezers and continue removal without messing the design.

Snowflake Nail Art
All nails were painted with Pahlish Sarey's Berry and one coat of KBShimmer Clearly On Top. I let them dry for 15-30 minutes before adding the snowflake nail vinyls.

After completely dry, I used all 4 different snowflake designs in this manicure:
  • Index and pinky: I applied one snowflake strand down the center of each nail from cuticle to tip. Then, I painted one coat of KBShimmer Radiant Orchid on the entire nail. While still wet, I used my needle nose tweezers to remove the nail vinyl strips from the tip back toward the cuticle. This strand of connected snowflakes was the most difficult to remove because the thin part between each snowflake wasn't strong enough to handle to pressure of pulling up. I had to grab part way through the nail and pull again on the part that stayed on the nail. Although I had trouble, the removal with the thin tweezers didn't cause any issues with the final look. I wish I had picked a more contrasting color for the top but you can still see that they are snowflakes.
  • Middle: I applied one large snowflake to the entire nail. These are big! I was happy that you could still see it was a snowflake despite hanging over the sides. Once applied, I painted one coat of KBShimmer Stonewashed over the entire nail. The part that slightly hung off the sides of my nail saved me because it gave me something to grab with my needle nose tweezers. I had to be careful during removal on this shape, too, as it had parts sticking around the outside.
  • Ring: this is my favorite design in this mani. I applied one medium snowflake and 2 small snowflakes hanging off of my nail. One coat of KBShimmer Hugs And Wishes was painted on top and then I peeled the vinyls back up while it was still wet. The snowflakes hanging over the nail were much easier to remove because part of the wide center of each snowflake was able to be grabbed for removing. It was able to take the pressure of removal and I had no parts break off during removal. The big contrast in the colors also made this my favorite nail.
All nails were topped with one coat of KBShimmer Clearly On Top to seal in and protect the designs.

Good morning, readers! It's DECEMBER!! How did that happen? Time is flying but I am thrilled that it's Christmas time! We've put up our Christmas tree and started planning our shopping lists. It will be here before we know it.

This morning's post is exciting! I was asked to take part in the Silly Bee's Chickadees Gift of the Melly this year. It's a collection of collaboration polishes that are inspired by each participating blogger's favorite holiday movie scene. $2 of each bottle sold will be donated to the blogger's charity of choice!

My polish is called Jacki's Who-ville Christmas. It was inspired by the scene in How The Grinch Stole Christmas where the Whos down in Who-ville wake up on Christmas morning and start to sing and celebrate together despite the fact that The Grinch stole all of their gifts and decorations.

In the polish, we were able to capture the multiple colors in that scene, centered around the glowing golden star of Christmas spirit. It's a clear base packed with tons of golden shimmer and hexes in holo pink, holo purple, lime green, pink, and orange. You can layer it over any color-- today I am showing it over a simple black creme to showcase the different colors.

This is one coat of Silly Bee's Chickadees Jacki's Who-ville Christmas over a black creme with top coat. ONE COAT, it's seriously that packed. It was suspended well in the bottle and spread nicely.

My charity/organization of choice is Polished Girlz. $2 from each of Jacki's Who-ville Christmas will go directly to them! Who wouldn't want to spread the love of nail polish and sparkle to those in need? Polished Girlz paint nails and teach the importance of hand washing to those with special needs and frequently hospitalized patients. I am so happy to help support them with this Gift of the Melly.

What do you think of my Gift of the Melly polish collaboration? I really love how it turned out and I hope you do, too. There are a limited number of bottles available starting today so don't hesitate if you would like to own a bottle! It's for a good cause, and is super fun and sparkly! Do you have any Dr. Seuss lovers around you? It would make a perfect gift this holiday season!

Jacki's Who-ville Christmas is available for $10 at the Silly Bee's Chickadees shop below. Remember, $2 from each bottle sold goes directly to Polished Girlz!

Holiday Glam Nails with Q-Tips Precision Tips!

Good morning, readers! It's time to start planning your looks for the upcoming holiday parties! Today's manicure is an idea for a holiday glam lookfor your nails! It will go perfectly with your holiday dress, or even work well at your ugly sweater celebration! Read on for a step by step, you may be surprised to see how I used Q-tips Precision Tips to create this look!

Are you familiar with Q-tips Precision Tips? Take a look below:

• The ultimate beauty tool, with tapered ends specially designed for precise application and touch-ups for nails, eyes, lips and more – perfect for achieve the ultimate holiday makeup look.
• Gentle and soft to use on delicate areas of the face, including around the eyes
• Made with 100% pure cotton for soft and gentle use
• “Q” stands for quality
• Affordable alternative to expensive makeup brushes
• Offers a clean and fresh application every time
• Flexible stick
• Light and portable for beauty on-the-go
• Convenient
• Disposable

I have been using Q-tips Precision Tipsfor a long time to help clean up the cuticles around my nail art. They are really great if you are doing a gradient or watermarble (or any of those super messy looks!).  The tapered edges help with some other uses, too!

To create my Q-tips Holiday Look:

Step 1) I first painted almost all of my nails with a deep evergreen creme. I wanted some accent nails, so my ring fingers were painted with a gold glitter base. I let all of my nails dry before moving on to the next step.

Step 2) For some added glam on my green nails, I dabbed the gold glitter onto a piece of wax paper and dipped myQ-tips Precision Tipinto it. I then dabbed the Q-tips Precision Tiparound the cuticle line of my nail and dabbed about 1/3 of the way up to the nail tip. I wanted to create a gradient so I dabbed with the gold glitter again at the cuticle line to have it more dense.

Step 3) Did you know that you can use Q-tips Precision Tipsas dotting tools in a pinch? That's exactly what I did here! I put a dab of the dark green creme on the wax paper and dipped the Q-tips Precision Tipinto it. I then created a "tree" shape with dots on the gold accent nail. (If you see a few stray strings at the end of your Q-tips Precision Tip, you can roll it in the polish before dabbing it onto the nail.)

Step 4) Time for the most well-known use of Q-tips Precision Tipswhen it comes to nail art: EASY CLEANUP! I just dipped the Q-tips Precision Tipinto acetone remover and rubbed it around on the cuticle to remove any stray glitter on the skin. They work so well for glitter removal because the glitter grabs onto the Q-tips Precision Tipinstead of just moving the glitter around on the skin like can happen with a cleanup brush.

Step 5) Apply top coat and you are good to go! You can even use a Q-tips Precision Tipdipped in lotion/cuticle oil to rub around the cuticle and bring the moisture back after using the polish remover.

Ta-da! Aren't these glamorous and perfect for your holiday look?

Q-tips Precision Tips can help in creating your perfect holiday glam lookfrom nails to lips to eye makeup and more! I highly recommend visiting the Q-Tips Instagram for tons of great look ideas for your holiday celebrations! #beautyQtips

Grunge Fairy Nail Art

$

Good afternoon, readers! I really love the grunge/worn/acid wash type nail art techniques but I don't always want grungy color palettes on my nails. I think it's the non-perfection of lines or designs that draw me in so I wanted to do something a little more "girly" with that idea in mind today. I guess we can call this Grunge Fairy!

  • I started out with a base of OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls and let it dry completely.
  • Then, I dabbed Girly Bits Mint-al Precision and Pahlish Petropolis side by side on my work surface and dragged a dry fan brush through them to slightly blend in the center.
  • I brushed it onto the nail from cuticle to tip for a rough gradient over the white base.
  • I then cleaned off the fan brush with acetone, dried it, and repeatedly added more color until the nails had the coverage I was happy with.
  • Once they were dry, I used bits of a torn makeup sponge and randomly sponged on OPI Girls Love Diamonds, OPI Unfrost My Heart, and Indigo Bananas Moonlight (Clair de lune).
  • KBShimmer Clearly On Top was used to seal and protect the design.

What do you think? I really loved wearing this manicure and it was simple enough to do both hands quickly. Thanks so much for reading!
